Details
This is a partial analysis of Crawl written following a game design exercise done during our 1st year.
Summary
General
Global Context
Crawl is a 2D Dungeon Crawler game, playable in solo or local multiplayer, the rooms are procedurally generated and linked together to form a dungeon.
A player, controlling the only human in the dungeon must get out of it as fast as possible, during this time bots or other players are ghosts and must prevent it.
When the human player dies, the ghost that gave him the coup de grace takes his place, and must in turn get out as quickly as possible.
Technology
Crawl was developed using Unity technology.
Plateforms
Crawl is playable on PC, Mac, PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch.
Target audience
The game targets both casual players by its fun side in co-op, as well as the more so-called "hardcore gamer by its difficulty, although it remains relatively accessible.
Langage
The game is only playable in English.
Controls
Players can play with more than one person on the same keyboard. It is also possible to configure the controls for each of them.
The movement keys are "traditional" keys (the arrows or ZQSD). There is also an attack key and a special attack key.

Menu screen
The menu screen is the first to appear. It allows, by clicking on the chosen button, to access either the game with the "Start Game" button, or one of the following sub-menu:
- The Vault menu
- The options menu
- The credits

You can access it from the main menu.
You can change the screen resolution, the controls, as well as adjust the volume.
Credits screen
You can access it from the main menu.
You can see the developers and the editors.
The Vault screen
It is accessed from the main menu.
The bestiary is the screen where you can learn about each element of the game, the selectable monsters
and their abilities, the unlocked weapons, the items (spells), the objects, the quests (achievements).

Before the game starts, the player must choose how many bots or players will play in the game. He must also, if necessary, choose his controls, and set the difficulty of the bots if he chooses to put them.
The player(s) also choose a monster set. The ghost players will be able to play these monsters opportunity arises, play as these monsters and fight the human player.
In-game screens
This is the first screen that can be accessed by clicking on the "Start Game" button from the main menu.
When the game starts, the 4 players must kill each other, the survivor will be the human player first, and the others will be ghosts.
The goal of the human player is to reach level 10 as fast as possible, in order to face the dungeon boss and win the game.
The ghosts, on the other hand, must kill the player to take his place as a human and pursue the same goal. The gameplay of the game can be translated as a race to the level.
The dungeon is composed of a multitude of rooms linked together by simple open doors, as well as different levels, also accessible by simple passages.
The doors preceded by a question mark indicate the path to follow.
The rooms can contain objects, which the ghosts can throw at the player to inflict damage.
In addition, if the player breaks these items, they leave ectoplasm, which the ghosts can collect to summon slimes, which are weaker than traditional monsters.
It can also have pentagrams drawn on the ground. These pentagrams are used by the ghosts, who by positioning themselves on them, can randomly summon one of their three previously chosen monsters.
Some rooms act as truces, during which the player can buy items, weapons or potions, all of which have a direct impact on our statistics and improve our performance in battle.
Boss screen
When the player reaches level 10, he can then return to the room from which he started.
In this room, a portal leads the player to an intermediate room, containing enough the player to the maximum of his life.
According to a random system, this room can also contain also contain enemies.
The portal, or door of this room leads directly to the boss.
When the player reaches the boss, he just has to defeat him by taking away all his life.
For to do this, he will have to mix dodges and placed attacks to achieve this.
Be careful, there are different bosses, so the player doesn't know which one he will fall on.
